Bethany Orphanage, Mukono, Uganda

Several miles east of Kampala is the town of Mukono and deep into the countryside south of the town, there is a newly established orphanage run by Eddie Mugwanya, himself a former orphan. He was adopted in the UK and is still only in his early 20s. The orphanage currently cares for 47 children and they are building new dormitory blocks. When visiting the orphanage last year we saw the need for installing rainwater harvesting tanks. Having seen the huge expanse of corrugated iron roof on the buildings we readily agreed to provide these tanks, The orphanage supplied most of the building materials and the TWAM tank building team got to work. The Uganda rains have soon filled up the tanks and they are providing a plentiful supply of clean water for domestic use during the dry seasons.

Ipswich Rotarians generously sponsored the building of these tanks following a TWAM talk at their lunchtime meeting and an evening visit to TWAM headquarters. This support will make a significant difference to the youngster’s lives at the Bethany Orphanage.
